Every Saturday, a group of Newton residents gathers near the Newton Centre Green to protest Trump administration policies. This weekend, they had a visit from U.S. Senator Ed Markey.
“You are the latter-day revolutionaries standing up for the principles which our ancestors did 250 years ago—liberty and justice for all—ensuring that everyone is able to benefit from all of this incredible gift which God has given to us,” Markey said to the dozens of people on the corner of Centre and Beacon streets Saturday afternoon.
The senator went through a list of grievances he and the protesters have with the Trump administration—from Elon Musk and his D.O.G.E. project to the detainment of Tufts graduate student by Rumeysa Ozturk by ICE agents in Somerville last week—and compared the current battle to the American Revolution.
“King George did not have a right to have unfettered power over the lives of everyone in Massachusetts, and King Donald and Prince Elon think that they do,” Markey said, wearing a hat with “1775” embroidered on it.
Markey said that while the Democratic party may be at a disadvantage now, the voices of constituents will matter in the coming months.
“The Republicans are not afraid of God, but they afraid of voters,” Markey said.
The weekly protests have been organized by Lynne Weissberg, Nadine Cohen and Susan Davidoff, and they’ve had a lot of participation. The previous weekend, the warm sunny weather brought out a lot of people. And this weekend, despite the cold rain, Ed Markey did.
“This is the third week,” co-organizer Weissberg said. “It’s to give people an opportunity to express their disdain, their distaste, for Trump, Musk, [J.D.] Vance, the rest of the cabinet.”
Here are some photos, and a video, from the rally.
