It’s been a tense few weeks in Nonantum, but all of that was left behind this weekend when the St. Mary of Carmen Society celebrated its 90th Italian-American Festival, also known as Festa.

In the early 20th century, as immigrant communities from Europe filled Nonantum, Italian immigrant families were shaping an identity in Greater Boston. With discrimination against various ethnic groups running rampant in social clubs, ethnic and religious groups emerged, including the St. Mary of Carmen Society in Nonantum and its Italian-American Festival, which gets about 10,000 visitors each year.

Check out these photo from Sunday’s procession of The Madonna through Nonantum, taken by photographer Tami Nguyen.
