U.S. News & World Report has released its list of Massachusetts’ Best Places to Live, and Newton ranks number 1 on the list.

The magazine uses data from Applied Geographic Solutions (which factors in census, Department of Commerce information, economic and education data and other sources) as well as a public survey to give every community a score. The score, from 1 to 10, is determined by quality of life, quality of education, unemployment stats, net migration and more.

Newton scored 6.5. That’s number 1 in Massachusetts and number 51 in the country. Waltham came in number 2. Somerville is third, and Brookline is fourth.

While affordability is an issue in Newton, it’s also an issue everywhere in Massachusetts. So that category is relative. But the things that make Newton great outweigh that, according to U.S. News & World Report.

“The national average home value is $370,489, while the median home value in Newton is $1,170,994,” the magazine’s ranking page for Newton reads. “Newton offers a higher value of living compared to similarly sized cities.”
