On Sunday, a crowd of people gathered at 28 Langley Street in Newton Centre outside the anticipated Asian Market, which was supposed to have opened May 1 where Walgreens once was.

But there was a “stop work” order on the front door, posted in late April by Inspectional Services Commissioner Anthony Ciccariello, citing the state’s building code and lack of an occupancy certificate.

It seems the problem is simply a hiccup in the order of permitting, which happens from time to time, according to Newton Economic Development Director Lauren Berman.

“There’s a ton of interest in the opening of this exciting new market in Newton Centre,” Berman said. “When a new business is planned and construction is involved there are lots of permits, inspections and sign-offs along the way. Sometimes a routine inspection reveals a missed step or inconsistency, and our Inspectional Services Department works with the permit holder to make sure it’s resolved and they get their Certificate of Occupancy. Our goal is always to help businesses open quickly while following the City’s regulations.”

The certificate of occupancy is the last step in the permitting process, meaning the business may open soon.
