In a couple of weeks, a corner of West Newton is going to be swarming with cops. And fire trucks. And food. And fun.
The Newton Police Department, along with police departments across the country, will host National Night on Tuesday, Aug. 6, from 5 to 8 p.m. at Cpt. John Ryan Park (right next to Police Headquarters) at the corner of Washington and Cherry streets in West Newton.
The annual event connects police, firefighters and residents in a fun block party atmosphere. And this year’s National Night Out in Newton will be amped up for the city’s 150th anniversary celebration.
“We’ll have touch-a-truck, we have cotton candy, popcorn and a bounce house,” Lt. Amanda Henrickson said. “There’ll be live music by the Irish Whispa. It’s just a fun night.”
National Night Out started in 1984, with the first year’s event held in 400 communities across 23 states, according to the National Night Out website, and grew to include 17,000 communities nationwide.
Newton’s National Night Out is sponsored in part by Wegmans, Village Bank, Honda Village, Tody’s Towing, Green Ocean Property Management, Advance Auto Center, Robbins Property Associates LLC, Newton Cultural Development, Cabots Ice Cream, Blue Ribbon BBQ, D&A Pizza and Che Empanada.
