Little Luke’s Cafe, located at 1225 Chestnut St. in Newton Upper Falls has reopened.

They’re serving hot coffee, frozen drinks, breakfast food, and a new addition to the menu—soft serve ice cream.

“We’re excited to open, after all we’ve been through,” said owner Phil Emmanuel, who also owns Grape Leaf Mediterranean Grille in Newton Highlands.

They were closed for over a year because of construction in front of the property.

Emmanuel was also struggling with kidney disease, which meant he had to spend several days a week at a dialysis clinic. But the construction has been finished, and Emmanuel received a kidney transplant.

“I feel pretty good right now,” he said. “We’re very excited to come back to work.”

The biggest addition to the menu is the soft serve.

“We have nine different flavors,” he said, thanks to the latest improvements in ice cream machine technology that allow restaurants to branch out from chocolate and vanilla. In addition to the two traditional flavors, they’ll have amaretto, black cherry, cake batter, butterscotch, coconut, salted caramel, and tutti frutti. For those who want a cold treat that isn’t ice cream, they also offer frozen coffee, non-alcoholic pina coladas, frozen lemonade, and smoothies with fresh fruit.

There are also breakfast sandwiches, like the ‘train wreck’, which is made of egg, sausage, bacon, ham, cheese, chipotle aioli, and home fries, named in homage to the fact that the cafe is in a former train depot. Muffins, bagels, pancakes, and eggs round out the menu. They can be enjoyed inside or on the restaurant’s large outdoor patio, which is located near the Newton Upper Falls Splash Park.

Emmanuel is a native of Newton Highlands who has been in the restaurant business for most of his life, and who opened his first restaurant, Grape Leaf, in 2010. While he was frustrated by the way the mayor and the planning board were dismissive of his issues with the construction, he was grateful for the support of Little Luke’s neighbors in Newton Upper Falls.

“Through all this, the Newton Upper Falls Commission and the community has been so supportive. They really went out of their way to be supportive,” he said.
