To the Editor:
Clearly, as your article points out, a well-intentioned gift to the Newton Public Schools can be fraught, raising legitimate concerns about equity and favoritism, despite a donor’s best intentions.
But there’s a less complicated option for those who would like to help: Newton Community Education, a chartered component of the Newton Public Schools system, maintains a robust scholarship program that enables both kids and adults in need to participate in our hundreds of wide-ranging educational course offerings, many after-school programs, vacation break events, and numerous summer camps—all designed to serve the citizens of Newton.
A gift to NCE helps ensure access to these rich offerings for individuals and families who may not have the financial resources to enjoy what thousands of other residents routinely experience throughout the year.
We encourage those who love their public schools to think of us as well the next time they’d like to express appreciation.

Chair, Newton Community Education Commission
