Dear Newton Beacon:

As a resident of Brookside Ave. I support the special permit application for 60 Brookside. The developer held two meetings with neighbors and was responsive to community feedback. The resulting proposal—a four-unit residence, with three homes in a main structure and one in a detached carriage house—fits nicely with the architecture of this historic street and addresses the need for more homes within walking distance of public transit.

Some neighbors have advocated for a three-unit structure instead. However, if the special permit is denied, developers potentially may build an imposing, closer-to-the street two-unit structure similar to the modern homes that have been popping up all over Newton. They look good for a number of years but fail to meet Newton’s sustainability goals for long-lasting construction.

The special permit process has resulted in a proposal that reflects the scale, architecture and streetscape of Brookside Ave. while advancing Newton’s goal for more housing for more families near village centers and transportation. I hope the Newton City Council approves the special permit for 60 Brookside.
