If you’re going shopping in Newton Centre on Memorial Day weekend, you may want to plan extra time for a parking space hunt.

The Langley Center Parking lot next to the Newton Centre Green will be closed May 22, 23 and 24, as crews plug away at repaving the lot. If weather permits, Newton Planning Director Barney Heath said, the lot will be open for that Sunday and the Monday holiday.

The work is unrelated to the Newton Centre Green Plaza Pilot, which will turn a portion of the parking lot into a plaza for gatherings and live music.

After the work is finished this weekend, most of the lot will reopen. The section that will remain closed will be part of the plaza pilot, which is set to be there until the fall.

The closure comes at a tricky time, with weekends becoming busy in the spring. And parking has already been a sore subject when it comes to the planned plaza.

Karen Masterson, who co-owns Cabot’s Ice Cream and Johnny’s Luncheonette, said that while Memorial Day weekend is still a tough time for roadwork, losing that lot during the Boston College graduation weekend coming up would have been disaster.

“It’s still disappointing that it has to be any weekend rather than earlier in the week but I think the rain has been an issue and the timing of when the project needs to be completed,” Masterson said. “Parking continues to be a challenging issue and another disappointing experience of dealing with City Hall.”

The planned pilot plaza has undergone some changes to deal with parking concerns. After feedback from neighbors and business owners in Newton Centre, the city revised its plan to take up fewer parking spaces than the original idea called for, by making several spaces public that weren’t public before (including 12 spaces of employee parking, two ZipCar spaces and two Blue Bike spaces).

The plaza is set to launch in late June.
