JJ Kazakoff-Eigen, candidate for the the Ward 1 City Council seat, is suspending his campaign.
“After reflecting on the process of campaigning and my current family obligations, my family and I have decided this is not the right time for me to continue in the current election cycle for Ward 1 City Councilor,” Kazakoff-Eigen wrote in a message to supporters on Monday. “I believe I would be an effective City Councilor and if at a later time the voters agree, I will welcome the opportunity to serve our wonderful community.”
Kazakoff-Eigen launched his bid for City Council with a call for the city to strengthen its public transportation and focus on affordable housing.
“I want to thank the many people in our community, leaders, fellow residents, friends and neighbors in Ward 1 for their encouragement and support,” his message continues. “I enjoyed meeting everyone and hearing what you have to say about this city that we love, and what we want to see for its future. I look forward to staying involved and contributing to our community.”
Despite the large number of new faces this election season, Kazakoff-Eigen’s exit leaves just three competitive races for City Council: for the Ward 4 and 6 at-large seats and the ward seat in Ward 5.
Kazakoff-Eigen will still be on the ballot, since he suspended his campaign so late in the election cycle.
Newton’s election will be Nov. 4.
