Turtle Lane auction postponed again
In the chaos and excitement of the election, the Turtle Lane Playhouse auction date came and went.
But there was no auction, again. The auction has been further delayed until Dec. 4.
Dedham Bank was foreclosing on the property, and the plan was to auction it off and allow the bank to reclaim at least some of its money. But right before it was to be auctioned in August, the property owner—Turtle Lane LLC—filed for bankruptcy, setting off a 60-day delay.
Then, when that 60 days was up in late October, it was delayed again until December. An abandoned playhouse could make an interesting Christmas present.

Thanksgiving Market coming to The Allen Center
Before planning your Thanksgiving meal, mark your calendar for Tuesday, Nov. 25. That’s when The Allen Center in West Newton will host Newton’s Fourth Annual Thanksgiving Market.
You can get fresh food from a local farm—produce, pies, side dishes—ready to pop in the oven, as well as bread, cheese boards, appetizers, chocolates, flowers, and a lot more.
Thanksgiving is on Thursday, Nov. 27.
A ‘No’ from Auchincloss
The federal government just went through the longest shutdown in history, but U.S. Rep. Jake Auchincloss, D-Newton, is not happy with the deal that got the doors reopened.
“This reported deal delivers none of the wins for the middle class that I laid out before the shutdown as options to get to yes: not on Medicaid, COPS grants, tariff relief, or corruption,” the third term congressman posted on X after the vote. “Democrats must stop playing by the old rules in a broken Congress.”
Senate Democrats were holding out for Affordable Care Act subsidies to be renewed, but that was not part of the deal. And there’s no promise by House Republican leadership to take up the issue of the health care subsidies now that the government is reopened, either.
The shutdown has resulted in flight delays, SNAP benefits being shut off, about 670,000 federal workers being furloughed and more. And if a longer spending deal isn’t reached, Congress could be back in the same situation in a couple of months.
Trader Joe’s opens in Upper Falls
Trader Joe’s is now open for business at 165 Needham St.
The new store, which held its ribbon-cutting Thursday morning, has more than 70 employees and is donating unsold products (that are fit for use) to local organizations to help people in need.
This new store opening has been in the works for a while, with company spokespeople telling MassLive in January that a second Newton store was coming but not telling anyone where that new store would be.
The Upper Falls location, along with a new store opened in West Roxbury this year, brings the total number of Massachusetts Trader Joe’s stores to about two dozen.
