Newton North High School’s Class of 2024 graduated on Monday evening, capping off a high school journey that started with a global pandemic and ended with a teacher strike.
“Resilient” was the theme of the night.
“In your unique high school experience, impacted by a worldwide pandemic, a teacher strike, a global socio-political climate that is most difficult, you are no stranger to living and learning in high-conflict environments and often feeling the weight of the world’s tensions on you,” Superintendent Anna Nolin said to the graduates.
Nolin added that such a unique experience makes them uniquely qualified to take on the world’s biggest challenges and affect meaningful change.
Math teacher Caroline Vuilleumier, chosen as the ceremony’s faculty speaker, noted the importance of community in getting through difficult times.
“Lean on your village when you need help,” Vuilleumier said. “Nurture your village when you have the capacity to do so. And know that you deserve your village always.”
Vuilleumier emphasized how proud the faculty and staff at Newton North are of the students.
“Go forth and be awesome,” she said. “Congratulations.”
The entire ceremony, including all the speeches, is on NewTV’s YouTube channel.
