With only seven weeks left before Newton’s local election, Christie Gibson—candidate for Ward 1’s School Committee seat—has announced she’s dropping out.

Gibson cited the burden that a rigorous campaign has on a candidate’s home life and said she felt this election would take too big a toll on her family.

“I’ve enjoyed talking to people across the city and learning about your experiences with the schools,” Gibson wrote in a message to supporters. “To the many people who have offered your time and support, I am deeply thankful for your goodwill and generosity. I look forward to continuing to support the schools in other ways.”

Since it’s so late in the election season, even though she’s dropping out of campaigning, Gibson’s name will still be on the ballot, against Ward 1 candidate Arrianna Proia.

Gibson and her family moved to Newton in 2021, as schools were grappling with COVID-19 protocols, lost learning and more. She volunteered for the schools, became a substitute teacher and eventually decided to run for local office.

Newton’s School Committee is set to see a dramatic changeover this November, as six out of eight members are not seeking reelection and Mayor Ruthanne Fuller isn’t either.
