“‘Cause I love to live so pleasantly, Live this life of luxury, Lazin’ on a sunny afternoon.” — The Kinks
The heat is planning to stick around for a few more days, so those of you with Gath Pool passes will want to put those to use. Also, Gath Poll is honoring Crystal Lake passes while the lake is closed for safety reasons.
Newton has an array of low-strain activities for the summer heat. Take in a movie and a concert at the Hyde. Stroll through the farmers’ market. Check out a night of Taiwanese food and culture. And stay hydrated.
Here are five things to do in Newton this weekend.
Friday, Aug. 15
From 6 to 10 p.m., listen to Koliba Afro Pop and stick around to watch “Fever Pitch,” a romantic comedy about a devout Red Sox fan, at the Hyde Bandstand, 90 Lincoln St.
Saturday, Aug. 16
From 9:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m., head over to Newton North High School for the Saturday Farmers’ Market.
At 2:30 p.m., the Newton Free Library will host a screening of “A Minecraft Movie (2025),” a film about four misfits in a bizarre, cubic wonderland that thrives on imagination. The movie is rated PG and 101 minutes long. Kids 9 and younger must have a caregiver with them.
From 6:30 to 9:30 p.m., the Taiwanese American Association will host a Taiwanese Street Market Night at the Hyde Playground in Newton Highlands. The event will feature a market from 6:30 to 8 p.m. with Taiwanese Bentos, Taiwanese sausage, fruits and other treats. Then at 7:30, there will be a showing of the film, “Alishan Forest Railway Journey,” that will include a talk with railway expert Ting-Wei KU.
At 7 p.m., Newton Community Choir will host “Rock Voices,” an evening of songs from one-hit-wonders from the past several decades. That includes “Rockin’ Robin” from the 1950s, “That Thing You Do” from the 1990s and many more.
