The heat is on. Summer makes its official entrance this weekend, and with it some of Newton’s summer favorites.

If gardening’s your thing, there’s a pollinator tour and a chance to help get rid of invasive plants. If sitting back and relaxing is more your speed this solstice, there’s an outdoor concert and movie at the Hyde.

Here are five things to do in Newton this weekend.

Friday, June 20

From 6 to 10 p.m., enjoy music by the Reminisants, and stick around to watch “Inside Out 2”, at the Hyde Bandstand at 90 Lincoln St.

Saturday, June 21

From 11 a.m. to 2 p.m., celebrate Midsummer at the Scandinavian Cultural Center at 206 Waltham St. with dancing around a maypole to Swedish music, flower crowns, and Swedish treats.

From 2:45 to 4:45 p.m., watch “Mufasa: The Lion King,” the 2024 live action movie about the backstory of Mufasa, Simba’s uncle, at the Newton Free Library, 330 Homer St. This movie is 118 minutes and is rated PG.

Sunday, June 22

From 9:30 a.m. to noon, you can help the Newton Conservators Invasives Team pick garlic mustard, buckthorn, black swallow-wort, bittersweet, japanese knotweed and other problems in Cold Spring Park. Trash bags will be provided.  Volunteers should complete this online Release Form or they can do it on site.

From noon to 4 p.m., there will be a Summer Solstice Newton Pollinator Garden Tour featuring native plant pollinator gardens around the city, in both private and public spaces. The south section Newton gardens will be open to tour from noon to 2 p.m., and the north section gardens will be open from 2 to 4 p.m. Preregistration is requested, and maps of the gardens and plant lists will be supplied by email. There will also be a gathering with refreshments from 4 to 5:30 p.m.

You can find more events or submit your own on our Events Page.

And the city has an ongoing list of arts-related events on the Newton Arts Calendar.
