If the rain won’t leave this weekend, maybe a horde of visiting Vikings can chase it away.
May is hitting the road and hopefully taking this rainy weather pattern with it. Meanwhile, Newton is kicking the summer season off with lots of fun events, indoor and outdoor, to get you and your family out of the house and into your community.
There are a couple of concerts you can check out, one of which features movie music. There’s a Viking Festival. And there’s a moving tribute to the late Goldstein family.
Here are five things to do in Newton this weekend.
Friday, May 30
From 7:30 to 8:30 p.m., Pro Arte’s concertmaster, Julia Cash, will perform along with principal cellist Steve Laven and guest pianist Joy Cline Phinney for a performance of Dvorak’s Dumky Trio at the City Hall War Memorial Auditorium. Admission is free.
Saturday, May 31
From 11 a.m. to 3 p.m., “Berzerk: A Viking Festival” will be held at the Scandinavian Cultural Center, featuring two “rival” Viking encampments on the center’s front lawn. See them work on traditional Viking-era craft, Viking games, combat demonstrations and more. There will also be vendors and food as well as a sauna (bring a swimsuit if you want to join in). Tickets are $25 for adults and $15 for kids.
From 6 to 8:30 p.m., the Newton Theatre Company will host “The Monologue Project: Remembering the Goldstein Family,” a tribute at the Hyde Bandstand to honor the memory of Matt, Valerie, Lyla and Violet Goldstein, who died in December in New Hampshire. There will be an hour of settling in and mingling, and the presentation will start at 7 p.m. Admission is free, but RSVP is requested.
From 7 to 9 p.m., the Linda Plaut Festival for the Arts continues with the eighth annual concert by Music, Arts & Fashion Productions, “At the Oscars: Greatest Hits from the Silver Screen,” at the Newton City Hall War Memorial Auditorium.
Sunday, June 1
At 3 p.m., there will be a free a cappella concert of choral pieces spanning 600 years from a variety of composers, at the City Hall War Memorial Auditorium, 1000 Commonwealth Avenue.
