We’re about to see a whole weekend with temperatures above 40 degrees for the first time in months. Make the most of it.
Newton is all about variety this weekend. Enjoy some classical music. Watch a movie about Icelandic women. See a play about a woman who loses a glass shoe.
Here are five things to do in Newton this weekend.
Saturday, March 8
At 1 p.m., the Scandinavian Cultural Center, 206 Waltham St., will host a showing of the movie The Day Iceland Stood Still (Dagurinn sem Ísland stöðvaðist), a film about Icelandic women stepping out of caretaking in 1975. Tickets are $10, $5 for members. This is a 70-minute film that is in Icelandic with English subtitles.
From 7 to 8:15 p.m., the Boston Choral Ensemble will perform a concert featuring music that connects the land with humanity at the Newton City Hall War Memorial Auditorium, 1000 Commonwealth Ave. Tickets are $25 general admission, $15 students/seniors, $10 children, $5 EBT card holders.
At 7:30 p.m., The Allen Center, 35 Webster St., will host a concert by Mariesther Alvarez, Allison Eldredge, Markus Däunert, and Yutong Sun featuring a new take on classical music. Tickets are $35 to $50.
Sunday, March 9
At 2 p.m., Temple Beth Avodah’s Arts Troupe will present Rodgers & Hammerstein’s Cinderella with a 10-piece live orchestra. Open seating tickets are $25.
At 3 to 4:30 p.m., The Highland Glee Club is will perform “Game of Tones,” featuring songs about knighthood, heroism and the supernatural, inspired by the HBO fantasy series, “Game of Thrones.” At the Newton City Hall War Memorial Auditorium, 1000 Commonwealth Ave. General admission $20 in advance; $25 at the door; 18 and under, free.
