The new year is coming in cold. Temperatures are expected to hover around freezing all weekend, with a chance of light snow on Saturday. Fortunately, Newton has plenty of indoor activities to keep you entertained.
There’s a showing of a 1990s cult classic film and, if that’s not enough nostalgia for you, a concert that has songs by Radiohead and Foreigner.
Here are five things to do in Newton this weekend.
Friday, Jan. 10
From 6:30 to 8:30 p.m., West Newton Cinema will have the latest in its Gen X Film Series, a screening of the 1994 film “Reality Bites,” starring Winona Ryder, Ethan Hawke and Ben Stiller. The film focuses on an aspiring filmmaker, played by Ryder, and her friends as they navigate young adulthood in the post-Cold War grunge era. The event will feature host Brad Abraham, a Canadian-born screenwriter, author and journalist whose work spans the worlds of film and television, literature, comics and podcasting. Admission is $20.
Saturday, Jan. 11
At 1 p.m., the Scandanavian Cultural Center will host a screening of the Norwegian film “Elskling [Loveable].” The movie centers around a working mother’s path toward personal growth after her husband asks her for a divorce. Tickets are $5 for members and $10 for non-members.
At 7 p.m., Oak Hill Middle School will host a concert by Rock Voices Newton, featuring songs by Radiohead, Foreigner, George Michael and more. Ticket prices vary, but kids get in free.
Sunday, Jan. 12
At 2 p.m., the Newton Free Library will host its first Sunday concert of the year, with Crowes Pasture. The award-winning duo delivers songs that contemplate all parts of life, with the help of banjo and guitar. Admission is free.
At 3 p.m., All Newton Music School, 321 Chestnut St., West Newton, will host a String Trio Wolf Benefit Concert. Boston Symphony Orchestra musicians Sophie Wang, Leonardo Vasquez Chacon and Kelly Knox will perform music from Ludwig von Beethoven, Rebecca Clarke and Leo Weiner. Tickets are $30 for general admission and $10 for youths.
