Five things to do in Newton this weekend

“Life starts all over again when it gets crisp in the fall.”—F. Scott Fitzgerald, The Great Gatsby

With the 2024 election behind us and winter rapidly approaching, this weekend promises the perfect weather—sunny skies and temperatures in the low-60s—to get out and enjoy some of the last fall days of the year.

Take the kids to a concert. Shred some documents and enjoy some opera music. Soak in some calm before the hustle of the holiday season.

Here are five things to do in Newton this weekend.

Friday, Nov. 15

From 8 a.m. to noon, Newton will have a Community Document Shredding and Drug Take-back at the Newton Resource Recovery Center, 115 Rumford Ave., Auburndale. Bring your documents to be destroyed and medications you don’t want or need. Shredding service is for residential documents only, not business ones. The program is limited to four document boxes or eight paper bags per car, and advance sign-up is required.

From 6:30 to 10 p.m., Temple Emanuel will host “Broadway Shabbat Dinner,” a musical dinner theatre event, at Reisman Hall, 385 Ward St., Newton.

Saturday, Nov. 16

From 4 to 5 p.m., All Newton Music School will have a concert, Miss Moppet and Three Little Pigs, blending chamber music and storytelling. The concert is for kids ages 4 and up.

From 7:30 to 9:30 p.m., Newton Baroque will present a concert, “London Rivals: Cantatas and Sonatas by Nicola Porpora and George Frederick Handel,” at the Allen Center, 35 Webster St., West Newton. The concert will feature music inspired by two 18th century operas. Tickets are $35 for general admission, $30 for seniors and $10 for students and low-income individuals.

Sunday, Nov. 17

At 3 p.m., The Allen Center will host a concert, “Classical with a Twist: West Newton Pops,” with popular music through a cultural lens. This variety-style pops concert has a Latin song and dance theme featuring a Tango performance from Boston Ballroom.
