U.S. Rep. Jake Auchincloss, D-Newton, was recently on Comedy Central’s “The Daily Show” with Jordan Klepper

The two talked mostly about what Democrats in Congress are doing in the face of President Donald Trump’s bold agenda and the Republican party’s majorities in the House and Senate.

In particular, they talked about the president’s tax bill that is before Congress now (also known as the “One Big Beautiful Bill Act”), which includes Medicaid cuts and which various House committee members—including Auchincloss, who serves on the House Energy and Commerce Committee—just spent 27 hours marking up with changes and additions.

“Their plan backfired,” Auchincloss said. “They put the health care portion of the bill in the middle of the night, because they didn’t want Americans to see them cutting health care from 13 million patients. The problem is that means they had to talk about health care policy at 3 or 4 a.m., and no one’s at their best. So, I had one Texas Republican trying to explain why firing the scientists at the FDA, who are in charge of making sure your eye drops don’t blind you, is not a win for government efficiency.”

They also discussed, education, housing, next year’s midterm elections and the impacts of social media.
