There’s a new political action committee in town.
Voters for a Vibrant Newton is a new PAC aimed at “electing city councilors who champion a sustainable and vibrant community where people from all backgrounds can live, work, and learn together,” according to the PAC website.
The PAC’s Steering Committee consists of six Newton residents: Joana Canedo, Brooke Lipsitt, Luke Mann-O’Halloran, Kathy Pillsbury, Laura Towvim and Lynn Weissberg.
The PAC website doesn’t list any specific stances on any issues, but it does promise to promote local candidates for City Council who campaign on “sustainability” and “vibrancy.”
So far, all the election attention has been on the School Committee, which is set for a near total turnover in November. But there are also a few City Council seats that need filling—Bill Humphrey and Andreae Downs aren’t running for reelection, and Marc Laredo is running for mayor—and candidates are starting to emerge to fill them.
“We are excited that the field is starting to take shape and we are working to make sure we have successful candidates in all wards,” Weissman wrote in announcing the new PAC.
So far, Ward 5 is seeing the most action. Garry Miller and Julie Irish have stepped up to run for Humphrey’s seat, while Brittany Charm is running for one of the At-Large seats.
And in Ward 6, Sean Roche has been collecting signatures for a City Council seat run, although he hasn’t announced officially, and At-Large Ward 6 Councilor Vicki Danberg has not announced if she’s running again or not.
So Voters for a Vibrant Newton may have a busy next couple of months.
