Fresh off a sale that saved it from closing forever, West Newton Cinema is making improvements, starting with new accessibility services for people who are hearing-impaired.
Cinema Manager Jesse Cerrotti and West Newton Cinema Foundation President Elizabeth Heilig announced on Thursday morning in an email to supporters that the cinema had installed new audio enhancement features, descriptive audio technology and closed captioning devices in all six of the cinema’s movie houses.
“If you, or someone you know needs any audio or closed caption services, please talk to one of our staff at the front desk, and they will be able to assist you,” the announcement reads. “Additionally, open caption showtimes are still available upon request.”
The email notes that most new movies come with audio descriptive and closed captioning options.
“If you are coming for a special event or repertory film showing, we invite you to call ahead to inquire about the audio and descriptive devices for your show,” the update concludes.
The West Newton Cinema Foundation purchased the cinema last summer, as part of a deal with the developer that bought the property a few years ago. The nonprofit now plans to renovate the cinema into a cultural arts center similar to the Coolidge Corner Theatre in Brookline.
