The Newton Police Department held its annual National Night Out block party at Captain John Ryan Park in West Newton on Tuesday.

The gorgeous weather helped bring out a couple thousand people to play games, eat food and get to know their city’s police and firefighters in a fun setting.

National Night Out started in 1984, with the first year’s event held in 400 communities across 23 states, according to the National Night Out website, and grew to include 17,000 communities nationwide.

Newton’s National Night Out is sponsored in part by Wegmans, Village Bank, Honda Village, Tody’s Towing, Green Ocean Property Management, Advance Auto Center, Robbins Property Associates, Newton Cultural Development, Cabot’s Ice Cream, Blue Ribbon BBQ, D&A Pizza and Che Empanada.

Check out these photos from this year’s event.
