There’s lots going on this weekend: a carnival, a movie screening, some music and some dancing. And the Linda Plaut festival kicks off another season of performances on Saturday. And if you’re feeling athletic, there’s a 5K on Sunday.
The May flowers have arrived. And for the first time in a long time, the weekend isn’t looking like a washout. In fact, with temperatures expected to be in the high 70s with mostly sunny skies, Newton is calling your name.
Here are seven things to do in Newton this weekend.
Friday, May 16
At 6 p.m., The Global Cinema Film Festival of Boston will screen “The Treasure Hunter,” at West Newton Cinema. This 2025 film from the Philippines (with English subtitles) about Yamashita’s Gold, supposedly buried by the Japanese Imperial Army during World War II, follows a young treasure hunter named Jack and his father as they search for the gold. The film focuses on themes of family and obsession.
Saturday, May 17
From 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., the city will host its annual City Carnival (FunFEST) outside Newton City Hall. There will be games, live mural painting, crafts, live music, dance performances and more. Admission is free, and if you can’t make the carnival on Saturday, don’t worry. It’s also being held all day Sunday.
At 2 p.m., the Newton Free Library will host a performance by Join Swati Biswas and her fellow dancers in celebration of spring. Performers will present several dances based on Indian music to depict the nature and beauty of spring, the famous festival Holi and a Sufi devotional song.
From 2 to 6 p.m., the Suzuki School of Music will host its Multicultural Arts Festival at 1615 Beacon St., Waban. There will be international performances, international potluck, and an inter-generational art show.
From 7 to 9 p.m., the Linda Plout Festival of the Arts will kick off its 10th season with a free country-music community dance party at the City Hall War Memorial, coordinated by Newton Community Pride and the City of Newton Department of Cultural Development.
Sunday, May 18
From 9 to 11 a.m., the Newton South High School Booster Club will have its fourth annual Lions 5k. The race is open to the public and runs through the streets surrounding Newton South High School. Race prizes will be awarded in several categories, including best lion-themed costume. Registration is $35 for adults and $25 for students.
At 4 p.m., the Nathaniel Topliff Allen Center will host a concert with Aaron Copeland, Nathaniel Dett and Alice Parker, celebrating diversity through folk songs.
You can find more events or submit your own on our Events Page.
And the city has an ongoing list of arts-related events on the Newton Arts Calendar.
