The Newton Police Department is hosting its annual National Night Out celebration on Tuesday evening at Captain John Ryan Park in West Newton, treating the community to a free block party full of games, food and opportunities to talk with local police and fire professionals.

The event will run from 5 to 8 p.m.

And so far, the weather forecast looks perfect for a block party. Temperatures are expected to hover around 80 degrees, with a few clouds but no rain.

“Special thanks to our partners at Newton Cultural Development, for entertainment from the White Collar Crime Band!” Lt. Amanda Henrickson wrote in an announcement about this year’s party. “There will also be a face painter, balloon artist, bounce house, touch-a-truck, resource tables, cotton candy, popcorn, hot dogs, hamburgers, pizza and more!”

National Night Out started in 1984, with the first year’s event held in 400 communities across 23 states, according to the National Night Out website, and grew to include 17,000 communities nationwide.

Newton’s National Night Out is sponsored in part by Wegmans, Village Bank, Honda Village, Tody’s Towing, Green Ocean Property Management, Advance Auto Center, Robbins Property Associates, Newton Cultural Development, Cabot’s Ice Cream, Blue Ribbon BBQ, D&A Pizza and Che Empanada.
