The Cooper Center for Active Living—a 32,000-square-foot, state-of-the-art activity center for Newton’s seniors (to be used by the whole community as well)—is set to open later this year.
And now you can get a sneak peak of the construction progress without endangering yourself on a construction site (which isn’t allowed, by the way).
Newton Public Buildings Commissioner Josh Morse has posted a video on YouTube that gives viewers a guided tour of the Cooper Center site.
“As you can see, the masons have been hard at work,” Morse says at the start of the nearly four-minute video, showing the new building’s exterior from Walnut Street. “Everything’s looking really nice out here. You can start to see it come together from the street.”
Inside, Morse shows what will eventually be a large dining hall area and a stage as well as a kitchen—which is being installed with drywall and insulation.
“The trades are really making things happen,” Morse says as he ascends a set of unfinished stairs to a second level, where multi-purpose rooms have already started to take shape.

The Cooper Center for Active Living is named after the late Audrey Cooper, who worked for Newton public schools for decades and co-chaired the committee aimed at getting a senior center built.
The site of the Cooper Center is where the city’s former Senior Center was, and before that the Newtonville Library was there.
The new facility will have a gymnasium with a suspended walking track, a game room, fitness rooms, activity spaces, an outdoor roof deck and more to keep seniors and their friends active and part of the community.
