We are writing in support of Garry Miller’s candidacy for City Council in Ward 5. Garry shares our concern about climate change and the environment and understands the urgency of tackling these issues at the local level.

The effects of climate change can already be felt here in Newton. We are experiencing hotter summers and stronger storms that result in greater flooding and damage to trees. Garry understands that responding to climate change is more than setting goals; it requires taking action to reduce carbon emissions to prepare Newton for what is ahead. Garry supports strengthening the City’s building standards to reduce carbon emissions, expanding our tree canopy, creating rain gardens and green buffers to manage stormwater, and increasing the use of solar power to reduce our reliance on fossil fuels.

When Northland Development proposed eliminating the free shuttle that it had previously committed to run between the Needham Street site and the Newton Highlands MBTA station, Garry–as a member of the Northland Neighborhood Liaison committee–worked to ensure that it kept its promise. The shuttle will not only reduce traffic and thus carbon emissions, but it will also benefit both the future residents of Northland and the residents of Upper Falls, who will have better access to public transportation.

If you care about keeping Newton sustainable and resilient, please join us in voting for Garry Miller for City Council in Ward 5.

Sincerely,

Deborah Drosnin and Marc Eichen
