To the editor,
I write in response to “Newton residents urge stronger anti-ICE measures in public forum” in two respects.
First, in case your readers wonder how many people were there on each side of the subject, I estimated that about 40 people spoke out for stronger measures against ICE’s illegal activity, while only 5 people supported the agency.
Second, to correct the record as I did that night in contradiction to those saying that ICE only detains “criminal aliens” and “criminal immigrants who broke the law,” the libertarian CATO Institute reports* that only 5 percent of ICE detainees have convictions for violent crimes and 73 percent have no criminal convictions at all.
The ones breaking the law—and the Constitution—are ICE agents. I urge Newton to do everything possible to protect its residents, workers and visitors from all illegal actions.
