Five things to do in Newton this weekend

It’s Memorial Day weekend, the unofficial start of summer and a time to reflect on those we’ve lost and enjoy cookouts with those who are still around.

It’s also a weekend when not many events are held because people are generally busy with family gatherings.

But don’t worry. Newton has you covered. In addition to a day of sports for the kids and a night of music for the adults, the city will have a two days of Memorial Day activities to attend.

The weather forecast says temperatures are going to be around 80 degrees all weekend, so stay hydrated.

Here are five things to do in Newton this weekend.

Friday, May 24

From 7 to 10 p.m., Moldova Restaurant will have live music “Conical Cacophony – Balkan-inspired dance jams,” featuring traditional Balkan music from Macedonia, Serbia, and Bulgaria as well as dancing andĀ festive conicalĀ hats.

Saturday, May 25

From 9 a.m. to noon, Bowen Elementary School will host a free Sportball Multisport class for kids. Children will be able to explore various sports (soccer, basketball and more) in a safe, supportive and engaging setting.

Sunday, May 26

At 9 a.m., the city will have its Memorial Day Ceremony, which will meet at Forte Park, 235 California St., and proceed to hang flags on bridges across the Massachusetts Turnpike in Newton in honor of the city’s fallen service members.

At 3 p.m., the city will have its Memorial Day Parade, which will start at Newton North High School and proceed over the Massachusetts Turnpike and onto Washington Street before concluding at Coletti-Magni Park in Nonantum. There will be horses, live music and more.

Monday, May 27

At 10 a.m., the city will have its Memorial Day Wreath Laying Ceremony at Newton Cemetery. The ceremony will begin at the Veterans Lot near the entrance and then continue to the next two lots.
