With less than 10 weeks to go in Newton’s local election season, the races are starting to show signs of shenanigans.

Victor Lee, who’s running for the Ward 8 seat, and Jonathan Greene, who’s running for the Ward 6 seat, say that multiple people have reported their campaign signs stolen from their lawns.

Newton Police Lt. Amanda Henrickson confirmed that on Aug. 18, “three separate reports were filed with the Newton Police regarding stolen campaign signs for school committee candidates. The stolen signs were for candidates Victor Lee and Jonathan Greene.”

Lee said a supporter on Cyprus Street called him recently to tell him his campaign sign had gone missing from their lawn, but he didn’t think much of it.

But then, Greene’s sign disappeared from the same yard.

“That day, we replaced them, and they disappeared again,” Lee said.

And Greene—who lives near that house—recently had all of the campaign signs stolen from his own front lawn.

“I had my sign and signs from several other campaigns removed from my own property, which to me felt targeted,” Greene said.

Lee said he contacted City Hall to see if the city had removed the signs, and they told him the city had not.

“That’s when we started to say, ‘Hmm, this is interesting’,” Lee said.

Shortly after, their signs were removed from a yard near the intersection of Crescent Avenue and Beacon Street and thrown over a tall fence. And this week, another supporter reported their Lee and Greene campaign signs stolen.

“It’s a bizarre thing, where we’re starting to see this happen so much in a short amount of days,” Lee said. “That doesn’t really feel like a coincidence.”

The sign stealing has sort of become a spree.

“Approximately nine signs have been reported stolen,” Henrickson continued. “The majority believed to have been stolen between 08/15 – 08/17.”

Police have no suspects yet, but they’re investigating and adding patrols in the areas hit (Newton Centre near Cypress and Centre streets).

Anyone with information is asked to call the department at 617-796-2123.
