Later this month, Newton’s two high schools will face each other in a tennis competition and honor a beloved coach.

The 20th annual Garden City Cup, an exhibition match between Newton North and South, will grace the Newton South tennis courts on May 22.

The Garden City Cup honors the memory of Linda Zuker, Newton South’s former assistant girls tennis coach, who died from a rare viral disease. After her death in 2002, a foundation was set up in her honor—the Linda Zuker Memorial Youth Fund—that supports youth sports in the region. And the nonprofit Tenacity was established as well, to promote tennis in inner city areas.

There will be about 80 players total, varsity and junior varsity.

“This tradition, more than two decades old, has helped not only to bring the high schools together but to benefit the wider community as well. It also keeps alive the memory of our beloved friend and former coach, Linda Zuker,” wrote Bob Jampol, of the Friends of Newton Tennis, in announcing this year’s event. “As the season winds down, the Garden City Cup allows the players to compete in the spirit of fun.”

The Garden City Cup starts at 4 p.m. with boys and girls junior varsity in mixed doubles, eight-game pro-set matches, and tiebreaker at 7-7. Then there will be a ceremony honoring the players.

At 5:15 p.m., varsity boys and girls start, along with mixed doubles pairings. Players will play eight-game pro-set matches, with tiebreaker at 7-7.
