“In the Spring, I have counted 136 different kinds of weather inside of 24 hours.” — Mark Twain

It’s the first weekend of spring in Newton and while there may not be 136 kinds of weather ahead, the count could be close: Friday is expected to be cold and rainy with high winds, before Saturday brings sunny skies and temperatures in the 60s.

There’s plenty of music to accompany this spring weather symphony, including two piano summit performances and another celebrating daring women. And what’s spring without a prom?

Here are five things to do in Newton this weekend.

Friday, March 21

At 7:30 p.m., Theatre Ink will present “The Prom,” a musical theatre production about LGBTQ rights and standing up for oneself, at Newton North High School. The play follows Emma, an Indiana high school student who faces opposition from her school’s PTA for wanting to take her girlfriend to the prom before Broadway stars arrive to support her.

Saturday, March 22

From 3 to 5 p.m., Newton Piano Summit will have a concert, featuring Domas Žeromskas and Dennis Montgomery III, at Second Church, 60 Highland St., West Newton.

Sunday, March 23

At 3 p.m., the Charles River Wind Ensemble will have a free concert, “States of Mind,” at 300 Hammond Pond Parkway, Chestnut Hill.

From 2 to 3 p.m., the Newton Free Library will host a concert, “Daughters of Eve: A Concert of Music Written by Women Who Dare,” in the library’s Druker Auditorium. The concert will feature music by Amy Beach, Louise Farrenc and Francine Trester, on flute, viola and piano. The music incorporates original poetry written by the performers, centered around women past and present.

From 3 to 5 p.m., Newton Piano Summit will have a concert, featuring Anastassiya Petrova, Jazz Alchemist, at Second Church, 60 Highland St., West Newton.
