City Council President Marc Laredo is running for mayor.

“As your mayor, my goal will be to make Newton the best place to live for all of our residents, in all 13 of our villages,” Laredo wrote in an email to residents announcing his candidacy.

Laredo was raised in Newton, attending Cabot Elementary, Bigelow Middle School and Newton North High School.

Laredo served on the School Committee for eight years before he was elected to the City Council in 2012.

Professionally, Laredo is an attorney with background in business law. He’s a founder and managing partner of the Boston-based law firm Laredo, Smith & Kane, LLP, and in the late 1980s he served as assistant attorney general in the Criminal Bureau of the Massachusetts Attorney General’s Office.

Laredo’s campaign has a new website, too.

Laredo and his wife, Roberta, have three kids: Matthew, Joshua and Emma.

Laredo is the first candidate to announce for the 2025 mayoral race. Mayor Ruthanne Fuller has not yet announced a reelection campaign.
