DESCRIPTION:Want to try an instrument that is fun and relatively easy to play? Learn the fundamentals of ukulele playing with Julie Stepanek Murray! This three part series will cover the basics (tuning\, fretting\, strumming\, and reading chord diagrams) as well as providing the opportunity to ask questions and to play fun and easy songs. No experience necessary. This series is geared towards adults. \nWe recommend attending all three sessions of this workshop since each workshop will build on the previous one. But if you already know a few basics or feel confident that you can catch up\, you’re welcome to join the later sessions. \nYou can either bring a ukulele to the workshop or register to use one of Julie’s. If you have your own ukulele (or borrow one of the Library’s)\, no need to register in advance – just show up! \nIf you want to use one of Julie’s ukuleles\, please register on the Library’s website. DESCRIPTION:Newton Conservators will host its annual dinner meeting at 6PM on Thursday\, May 7\, at the American Legion Post 440 on 295 California Street in Newton. Standard tickets are $65 and Nature Advocate tickets are $125. The deadline to register is May 1.\nThe social gathering will start at 6PM\, followed by dinner and awards presentations at 7PM. As dessert begins\, Dr. Nick Dorian\, research fellow at the Chicago Botanic Garden\, will present a talk on “The Secret Lives of Native Bees.” Nick will introduce some of the fascinating wild bees of eastern North America and their varied lifestyles\, habitat needs\, and relationships with native flowering plants and other insects. He will explain why bees are essential for a healthy environment and how to help these important pollinators. (At Nick’s request\, Newton Conservators will not be recording his talk.)\nNick is a pollinator ecologist and consultant who has developed methods to study wild bees throughout their life cycles and co-authored a popular field guide to bee identification. As a consultant\, Nick has worked with landscape architects\, urban planners\, and land managers to envision and improve the conservation outcomes of design projects and green space for both people and nature\, such as for the award-winning Somerville Action Plan.\nNick received his B.S. and Ph.D. in Biology at Tufts University and did his postdoctoral research fellowship in Biology at the Chicago Botanic Garden. As of August\, he will be an Assistant Professor at the City College of New York.

Both bands’ spiritual home became the Athens clubs. The 40 Watt Club stands out as the central hub of their shared history. Even decades later\, in December 2022\, the Indigo Girls returned to the 40 Watt to perform at the 40th Anniversary celebration of R.E.M.’s Chronic Town EP\, cementing the venue as a historical monument to their shared lineage. DESCRIPTION:Want to try an instrument that is fun and relatively easy to play? Learn the fundamentals of ukulele playing with Julie Stepanek Murray! This three part series will cover the basics (tuning\, fretting\, strumming\, and reading chord diagrams) as well as providing the opportunity to ask questions and to play fun and easy songs. No experience necessary. This series is geared towards adults. \nWe recommend attending all three sessions of this workshop since each workshop will build on the previous one. But if you already know a few basics or feel confident that you can catch up\, you’re welcome to join the later sessions. \nYou can either bring a ukulele to the workshop or register to use one of Julie’s. If you have your own ukulele (or borrow one of the Library’s)\, no need to register in advance – just show up! \nIf you want to use one of Julie’s ukuleles\, please register on the Library’s website. When you sign up\, you are registering for all three sessions. Please note that Julie’s instruments are available during the workshops but need to be returned to Julie at the end of each session and cannot be taken home.

DESCRIPTION:Elizabeth Barnes will present the latest information about the spotted lanternfly\, an invasive insect that feeds on over 100 plant species and is an agricultural and nuisance pest. In addition to killing grapes\, black walnut saplings\, and Ailanthus saplings\, they also are a major nuisance pest in yards\, parks\, and outdoor venues. This presentation will cover the issues they cause\, their current distribution\, and an overview of management options. \nElizabeth is the Forest Pest Outreach Coordinator with the Massachusetts Department of Agricultural Resources and previously worked as the Exotic Forest Pest Educator at Purdue University.
