SUMMARY:"The 'Radical' Middle" with Comedian Jimmy Tingle
DESCRIPTION:Join us at the West Newton Cinema for a showing of comedian Jimmy Tingle’s humorous\, hopeful film The “Radical” Middle\, detailing his 2018 campaign for lieutenant governor of Massachusetts. Described as “meaningful and laugh-out-loud funny” by fellow Boston-area comedian Steven Wright\, the film tackles the United States’ fraught political climate with wit and candor. After the screening\, Tingle will be present for a talk and Q&A. \nAbout the Film: \nIn JIMMY TINGLE: The “Radical” Middle — Why Would A Comedian Run For Office? Jimmy chronicles his fascinating transition from a life as a seasoned comedian to a desire to enter into politics\, for real this time. \nHe applies his distinctive Boston brand of humor to solve some of America’s most complex problems. \nThis original and autobiographical film challenges audiences to move beyond the politics of tweets\, sound bites\, and the nightly — or hourly — news cycle… and into the realm of long-term thinking and life-affirming possibility\, as the United States faces the election of 2024 with a myriad of emotions\, passions and theories. \nThrough the lens of common sense\, comedy\, commentary and conversation\, Jimmy aspires to contribute to the national dialogue in a hopeful\, positive — and funny — way as America strives to create\, in the words of Abraham Lincoln: “a more perfect union.” \nJimmy’s ingenuity and deep compassion provide a much-needed and thought-provoking antidote to the politics of our day. \nTickets can be purchased here: https://www.eventbrite.com/e/the-radical-middle-with-comedian-jimmy-tingle-tickets-1043011624847?aff=oddtdtcreator \nScreening at 7:30pm\, with Q&A immediately following. \nYour participation supports our efforts to preserve a beloved local theater. We hope to see you there!

SUMMARY:“The Old Oak”— Screening and Panel on Immigration in Boston and Beyond
DESCRIPTION:RENOWNED DIRECTOR’S FINAL FILM TACKLES ONE OF THE MOST FRAUGHT TOPICS OF TODAY \nJoe Kennedy III\, Marcela García\, Wilfix Cherazard\, and Ty Burr discuss Ken Loach’s “The Old Oak” and the immigrant crisis. \nThe movie screening will be September 12\, 6 p.m.\, at the West Newton Cinema. The event will be a joint fundraiser for English for New Bostonians and the West Newton Cinema Foundation. \nOne of the best films of 2023\, “The Old Oak” is a British drama about a poor mining town in the north of England\, the title pub at which the locals gather\, and the pub owner who befriends one of the town’s Syrian refugees and\, in being welcomed into her community\, is threatened with being ostracized from his own. It’s a humane masterpiece from writer-director Ken Loach\, who\, at 88\, has announced that after more than three dozen movies\, “The Old Oak” will be his last. \nThe film addresses one of the thorniest of modern issues\, the international refugee crisis and its effects on local communities\, and it does so in a way that is relevant both universally and to lived experiences in the Commonwealth of Massachusetts. \nFollowing the screening on the 12th\, a distinguished panel will discuss the film and the issues faced by immigrants and local communities alike. Moderated by former Boston Globe film critic Ty Burr\, the panel will include former Congressman Joe Kennedy III\, Boston Globe reporter Marcela García\, and others! \nTickets can be purchased here: https://www.eventbrite.com/e/the-old-oak-screening-and-panel-on-immigration-in-boston-and-beyond-tickets-998827027527?aff=oddtdtcreator
