In this webinar we’ll also discover together what fungi can teach us about art\, resistance\, and the living world around us. \nMaria is a Boston-area naturalist\, educator\, and author of fiction and nonfiction. She leads regular fungal forays at Harvard’s Arnold Arboretum and has given lectures and led workshops for mycological clubs and environmental organizations around the country. Her writing has appeared in Science\, Orion\, Necessary fiction\, and Obsidian\, among other publications. Her book of lyric essays inspired by fungi\, Fearless\, Sleepless\, Deathless: What Fungi Taught Me about Nourishment\, Poison\, Ecology\, Hidden Histories\, Zombies\, and Black Survival was shortlisted for the OCM Bocas Prize for Caribbean Literature\, is a finalist for the Massachusetts Book Award\, and was the recipient of the Don Kissel Prize for Nonfiction.

DESCRIPTION:Join Eric Highers and Jonathan Yeo as they educate us about basic infrastructure and pollutant-loading concepts and share the nuances of a generally underappreciated public utility\, all while showing its increasing importance within the uniquely developed environment of Newton and our changing climate. \nEric serves as the Environmental Engineer for the City of Newton\, managing city compliance with state and federal regulations pertaining to stormwater discharge into the Charles River. He is regularly involved in a variety of retrofit and maintenance projects necessary for the continuing function and improvement of Newton’s historic storm drain network. \nJonathan is the part-time Stormwater Program Planner in DPW-Utilities. He had a 30 year career in water resources management with the MWRA and as Director of Water Supply Protection for the Massachusetts Department of Conservation & Recreation before becoming the City’s Chief Operating Officer from 2018 through 2025.
