Our ride will visit a total of six of these art exhibits located in various parts of the city\, and to top it off we will end up at the TRIO Courtyard in Newtonville in time to see one of NCP’s Fall Village Concerts. The fabulous Trilogy band (led by Tal Shalom-Kobi of West Newton) will be performing a live show at 5:00 PM. \nMeet at the Newton Free Library on Homer St.\, and we’ll leave at 3:00 PM. This is a family-friendly\, “no-rider-left-behind” ride and all ages are invited\, but all young children must be accompanied by an adult. Also featured will be a video montage of clips addressing the question\, submitted by people with disabilities. DESCRIPTION:On Thursday\, February 29\, 2024\, the League of Women Voters of Newton – together with its cosponsors Better Action Now for Artificial Turf in Newton\, Green Newton\, and Mothers Out Front Newton – will be holding a Topic Meeting on per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS)\, a group of man-made chemical compounds known as “forever chemicals” because they don’t break down easily in the environment. \nThe Topic Meeting will take place in the Druker Auditorium\, at the Newton Free Library\, 330 Homer Street\, Newton at 7:00pm. The meeting will consist of a presentation followed by a question and answer session. Sunday morning\, October 22nd\, bring the kids. From 9:30-noon\, enjoy mini golf\, a continental breakfast\, coffee\, tea and hot chocolate\, and Cabot’s Ice Cream. The silent auction will be available as well. All proceeds will go to The Friends of The Newton Free Library (a 501(c)3 non-profit. The Friends provide much needed funding to the library to ensure the continuation of programming\, especially for children\, teens and ‘tweens.

SUMMARY:Canada's Poet Laureate to read at Newton Free Library
DESCRIPTION:Louise Bernice Halfe\, the first indigenous writer to be named Poet Laureate of Canada\, will have a reading and discussion at the Newton Free Library at 3pm on Friday October 13. Ms. Halfe\, of the Cree Nation of Saskatchewan\, is a survivor of the infamous “Residential Schools” where indigenous children were kept for years (in her case seven years) after the government took thousands of them away from their families and the native culture they were growing up in. Managed by Catholic nuns and priests\, physical and sexual abuse was rampant\, as was cultural abuse whose effects have haunted tribal families through several generations. Also knows as “Sky Dancer\,” Ms. Halfe’s poetry is both tender and enraged. Invited by The Poets’ Theatre in collaboration with the Canadian Consulate in Boston\, “Sky Dancer” will spend the week following Indigenous Peoples Day reading aloud and celebration her tribal heritage at various sites in the Boston area.

Invited by the Newton-based Poets’ Theatre in collaboration with the Canadian Consulate\, Sky Dancer will appear at the third annual Indigenous Newtonians event on Monday October 9 at 4pm at the Albemarle Field. She will also have a reading and discussion at the Newton Free Library’s Druker Auditorium on Friday October 13 at 3pm. As well as making appearances at Simmons and Tufts Universities\, she will also be featured at a gala event at the Museum of Science on Wednesday October 11 at 7pm. (This event is free but requires registration at MOS.org). As a child Ms. Halfe was taken away from her family by the Canadian government and placed in a series of Catholic-run “Residential Schools\,” where indigenous children suffered not just sexual and physical abuse\, but also cultural abuse\, being forbidden to speak their native languages\, and essentially being taught that indigenous life was worthless in modern Canada. SUMMARY:Newton Senior Center Concert Series: Archie Richards on Piano
DESCRIPTION:Archie Richards will perform a one-hour classical piano concert featuring numerous works by Frederic Chopin\, including the Scherzo in C# Minor\, which Artur Rubinstein played many times. Archie will also play a few pieces by Sergei Rachmaninoff and Franz Liszt. \nArchie started playing the piano as a child but didn’t find a good teacher until he was 32. That was Kyriena Siloti\, with whom he studied at the Longy School in Cambridge\, Mass. Then in her 80s\, Kyriena was the daughter and assistant of Alexander Siloti. He\, in turn\, was widely considered the best of the students of Franz Liszt and was world renown in the early 20th Century. While Archie was with Kyriena\, his performance of a major Beethoven sonata was played on WCRB-AM Radio in Boston on a Sunday morning. \nThis show\, which will take place in Newton Free Library’s Druker Auditorium\, is generously sponsored by the Jayne Colino Fund of the Senior Citizens Fund of Newton\, Inc. \nRSVP requested.
