SUMMARY:Blood and Honey: Modern Visions of Hildegard
DESCRIPTION:This is a story about a girl named Ursula. \nUrsula’s father wanted her to get married\, but Ursula had already devoted herself her true love; and\, this being the fourth century\, her true love was the Christian church. Instead of marrying\, she led a movement of thousands of young women to embrace their independence and choose to serve God instead of serving a husband. \nHildegard von Bingen – the “patron saint” of Cappella – wrote an abundance of vivid music and poetry about Saint Ursula. These chants celebrate womanhood and independence: women do not need anyone to “complete” them\, and they are “complete-in-themselves”. \nIn this program\, we present Hildegard’s music for Saint Ursula interspersed with micro-commissions from five emerging composers from the Boston area. These commissions will comment on and take their inspiration from the Hildegard chants. \nFeaturing music by: Hildegard von Bingen and up-and-coming local composers: Chloe DeSteno\, Natti Robinson\, Katie Semro\, Stella Gitelman Willoughby\, and Alex Van Sant.

SUMMARY:Season 19 Welcome

Founded in 2007 by violinist Betsy Hinkle\, BPQ was created to connect\, inspire\, and amplify voices historically excluded from classical music. The ensemble—now a flexible piano quintet—performs across the U.S. in spaces ranging from neighborhood street corners to national venues like the Kennedy Center\, and brings chamber music to communities with limited access to the arts. \nBPQ’s mission is rooted in “normalizing the amplification of historically excluded voices”—including the musicians on stage\, the composers they feature\, the students they teach\, and the audiences they engage. Members Betsy Hinkle (violin)\, Grant Houston (violin)\, Jason Amos (viola)\, Nicholas Johnson (cello)\, and Joy Cline Phinney (piano) are graduates of institutions including Juilliard\, New England Conservatory\, and the University of Michigan. Collectively\, they’ve performed with ensembles such as the Boston Ballet\, Boston Modern Orchestra Project\, the Sphinx Symphony\, and Castle of Our Skins. \nBPQ continues to collaborate across disciplines—partnering with visual artists\, dancers\, and composers—and remains committed to presenting meaningful\, inclusive performances that resonate with diverse communities.\nWant to stay in touch? SUMMARY:Visions for a Kinder World
DESCRIPTION:Visions for a Kinder World \nHow should we live our lives\, in a world where bad things happen to good people? What kinds of love and grace do we owe to ourselves and each other? How can we create lasting change\, peace\, and justice\, for all people? Cappella Clausura’s mission has always been rooted in justice\, in correcting an inequality by performing music by women. This program is our creed more broadly\, and includes music that promotes peace over war\, healing over hurt\, and people over policy. In short\, we present music about the better angels of our nature\, and how we can manifest a kinder world together. \nMusic by Mattia Maurée\, Dorothy Hindman\, Linda Chase\, and others. Proceeds from this concert will be split with The Second Step of Newton\, which provides support and advocacy for victims of domestic violence. Learn more at thesecondstep.org.
