There’s a storm brewing, and we’re expected to get a lot of rain the first half of the weekend. We’re still in a drought, so we can use the water. But don’t let that keep you holed up at home like some hermit.
One cure for the rainy day blues is food, especially pastries and other baked goods. And this weekend, Newton is having its annual Bakery Crawl throughout the city. On Friday and Saturday, you can visit various participating local independent bakeries for samples, deals and more. This is a self-guided tour, so go wherever your tastebuds take you. Here’s a list of bakeries to keep track and map out your delectable journey.

Friday, Sept. 25
From 7 to 10 p.m., the St. Ignatius Concert Series will open its 2026–2027 season on with Red Skies, featuring New England bluegrass musicians filling the Upper Church with rhythm, melodies and country vibes at 28 Commonwealth Avenue in Chestnut Hill. Suggested donation is $20-$30.
From 8 to 10:30 p.m., Newton Theatre Company will present “Parade,” a Tony-winning musical about faith, identity, and the impact of prejudice, at St. John’s Episcopal Church in DiMauro Hall, 96 Otis St. “Parade” is based on the true story of Leo Frank, a Jewish factory manager wrongly accused of murder in Atlanta in 1913. The play will run all weekend for three weekends, and tickets are $40.
Saturday, Sept. 26
From 1 to 3 p.m., West Newton Cinema will host a Musical Matinee screening of “High Society,” a film about a love triangle starring Bing Crosby, Grace Kelly and Frank Sinatra. The film is a musical remake of “The Philadelphia Story.” Tickets are $12.
From 2 to 3 p.m., All Newton Music School will host “Saturday Jam” with Joey Thieman. Guests can bring an instrument and drop in for a jam session with ANMS faculty member Joey Thieman, and all ages are welcome.
From 6:30 to 10 p.m., Don’t Forget Your Art will present gospel group Joyful Voices of Inspiration, with visual art from Rani Sarin, pottery from Julia Wolfe and more. Tickets are $5 to $15.
From 7 to 9 p.m., The Allen Center in West Newton will host a night of jazz presented by Cherry Street Music. The Allen Center will transform into a jazz club with intimate table seating, drinks and bar snacks to enjoy throughout the show, performed by Boston jazz performers George Russell Jr. and Donna McElroy. Reserved table tickets are $45. General admission tickets are $30. Card to Culture $5 tickets are available for EBT, P-EBT, WIC and ConnectorCare card holders.
Sunday, Sept. 27
From 10:15 a.m. to 12:30 p.m., First Unitarian Universalist Society in Newton, 1326 Washington St., will have its Community Expo after worship services. Representatives from the organization’s committees and action groups will be there to talk about opportunities to explore at FUUSN.
