SUMMARY:Christian Nationalism Symposium
DESCRIPTION:Press Release September 8\, 2025 \nFOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE \nChristian Nationalism Symposium \nWEST NEWTON\, MA – October 10-12\, 2025 – Second Church in Newton is hosting a community-wide Contemporary Issues symposium on the escalating dangers of Christian nationalism. \n“Christian nationalism has nothing to do with Christianity or love of one’s country\,” says. Rev. Corey J. Sanderson\, minister of Second Church in Newton. “It is an extremist political movement that seeks power and domination by imposing a fundamentalist Christian worldview on our diverse\, secular\, pluralistic democracy.” \nNo longer a fringe movement\, Christian nationalism has become mainstream. It has been the driving force behind halting DEI initiatives\, banning books\, stripping reproductive rights\, and refusing due process to American citizens. \nIf people don’t fully understand the Christian nationalist agenda\, the desire to turn the United States into an authoritarian Christian theocracy\, they will never be able to resist such a move or undo the damage currently being done. This weekend symposium aims to educate\, inspire\, connect\, and empower people to make real lasting change against such anti-democratic attempts. \nGuest Speakers include New York Times best-selling author\, Katherine Stewart\, whose new book new book\, Money\, Lies\, and God\, helps us see the power and money behind the Christian nationalist agenda. Evangelical minister\, The Rev. Dr. Rob Schenck\, a former Christian nationalist leader\, now speaks out against the movements he helped found. \nIndigenous Rights lawyer and professor\, Dr. Taiano Palermo\, will be speaking about Christian nationalism at our country’s founding and the systemic destruction that still plagues First Nations peoples. The Rev. Janna Louie helps lead the Baptist Joint Commission\, a historic organization that protects religious freedom\, who leads the ‘Christians Against Christian Nationalism’ movement. \nAre you disturbed by the recent ICE detentions\, attempts at voter suppression\, anti-LGBTQ+ legislation\, rampant xenophobia\, and escalating military violence? Then join us. Do not miss the chance to learn from national experts and connect with other people locally who want to do something constructive. \nChristian nationalism is the single greatest threat to democracy and its ideals of liberty and justice. While much of the event will focus Christianity\, this event is for the wider public. We sincerely hope people of other faiths and traditions (or none) will join us for this important event. \nDetailed information can be found on Second Church’s Facebook page: https://www.facebook.com/2ndchurchnewton/ \nContact:\nThe Rev. SUMMARY:Gospel Music Sunday
DESCRIPTION:WEST NEWTON\, MA – February 17\, 2025 – Second Church in Newton is hosting a special Gospel Music Sunday worship service featuring Sharon Molden and Friends\, directed by Herbert Jones. This special worship service will take place on Sunday\, March 2\, at 10:00 a.m. in the church’s sanctuary. All are welcome. \nThe Rev. Corey Sanderson says\, ‘In a time when the values of diversity\, equity\, and inclusion are being diminished and even threatened\, we want to celebrate the musical contributions of The Black Church.’ \nSharon Molden grew up singing gospel music in her home church in Texas and has performed with numerous choirs through the years. For the past 26 years\, Sharon has appeared at Symphony Hall as a lead vocalist and as a member of the Boston Pops Gospel Choir\, including performing concerts on the Esplanade. Sharon has also been a featured vocalist during the Holiday at the Pops for eleven concerts and was televised in a Pops concert taped for PBS’s ‘Evening At Pops’ with guest artists Patti LaBelle and Edwin Hawkins. \n“What makes Gospel Music Sunday meaningful\,” says Rev. Sanderson\, “is that it gives us hope and inspiration. So much of this music is about overcoming the struggles of life\, and we all have a lot of struggles these days.’ \nGospel Music Sunday is the conclusion of a five-week sermon series on Martin Luther King Jr.’s principles of nonviolence. Rev. Sanderson says\, ‘This is just our church’s way to offer a little burst of joy for the people of Newton and surrounding towns.’ \n“No matter who you are\, what you believe\, or even if you don’t believe anything at all\, you are welcome here\,” says Rev. Sanderson. “So\, come on down and join us for a Sunday morning full of joy!” \nSecond Church in Newton is located at 60 Highland Street in West Newton\, Massachusetts.
