SUMMARY:Coping with Ambiguous Loss
DESCRIPTION:When someone dies\, we have rituals to mourn their passing and accept that they are gone. We do not have the same rituals for losses in which the person may be physically absent but still living (such as disappearances or separation due to immigration\, incarceration\, or divorce) or physically present but emotionally or mentally changed (in part due to dementia\, Alzheimer’s\, or the loss of mobility and independence). These kinds of losses – in which there is no real closure or resolution – are known as “ambiguous losses.” \nIn this discussion\, Betsy Englander\, Mental Health and Wellness Engagement Manager at Jewish Family and Children’s Service\, will help participants gain a deeper understanding of ambiguous loss and learn tips and techniques for facing these losses in themselves and others. \nRSVP requested. Please stop by the Front Desk at Brigham House\, 20 Hartford Street\, or call 617-796-1675. Or send your name\, telephone number\, and email address to our receptionists at seniorprograms@newtonma.gov

SUMMARY:Book Talk: Sixty Blades of Grass
DESCRIPTION:Sixty Blades of Grass\, by Elizabeth Millane\, is an intriguing and dramatic\, yet personal\, story about the Dutch resistance during the Second World War. \nInspired by the author’s own family history\, this is a riveting\, heartrending novel of danger and betrayal that explores what it takes to lay down one’s life for another in the most harrowing of circumstances. \nElizabeth grew up along the shores of Lake Michigan\, loving books and family stories. It was natural for her to be drawn to the stories she overheard as a child when Dutch relatives visited her family\, and to seek them out when she lived abroad. She was educated at Boston College\, earning a Bachelor of Art in English literature\, and at the University of Lancaster\, Lancaster\, England\, where she completed a Junior Year Abroad program. During that year that she traveled extensively on the continent\, visiting her Dutch relatives several times and learning their tales of heroism and sacrifice\, which formed the basis for Sixty Blades of Grass. \nRSVP requested. Please stop by the Front Desk at Brigham House\, 20 Hartford Street\, or call 617-796-1675. SUMMARY:Senior Needs Assessment Survey – Seniors\, Have Your Say
DESCRIPTION:As the Department of Senior Services plans for the construction of the Newton Center for Active Living (NewCAL) project at 345 Walnut Street in Newtonville\, which will open in 2025\, the City of Newton has partnered with the University of Massachusetts Boston to conduct a needs assessment of the experiences\, interests\, and long-term needs of Newton residents age 60+. \nThe UMass team is researching demographic information\, facilitating focus groups\, and will gather important information from a survey that was mailed on January 22 to a random sample of 5\,000 Newton residents age 60+ and is also available online. The survey will help us plan for the future of programming and services offered at NewCAL and will inform City leaders about residents’ priorities on issues of livability. \nEvery resident age 60+ is encouraged to participate. The webpage www.newtonma/seniorsurvey includes information about the three ways to request a survey (including using the QR code above)\, if you did not receive one in the mail. \nBy completing the survey\, you can have your voice heard about your experience of living in Newton. We want to hear from you! \nThe deadline is February 16.

SUMMARY:Newton Senior Center Concert Series: Archie Richards on Piano
DESCRIPTION:Archie Richards will perform a one-hour classical piano concert featuring numerous works by Frederic Chopin\, including the Scherzo in C# Minor\, which Artur Rubinstein played many times. Archie will also play a few pieces by Sergei Rachmaninoff and Franz Liszt. \nArchie started playing the piano as a child but didn’t find a good teacher until he was 32. That was Kyriena Siloti\, with whom he studied at the Longy School in Cambridge\, Mass. Then in her 80s\, Kyriena was the daughter and assistant of Alexander Siloti. He\, in turn\, was widely considered the best of the students of Franz Liszt and was world renown in the early 20th Century.
