SUMMARY:Newton History Series: The Origins and Transformations of Chinese Communities in Boston
DESCRIPTION:When did Chinese migration to Boston begin? How did Boston’s Chinatown take shape\, and what is its current status? This talk traces the origins of the Chinese presence in the region and examines their experiences from the early years of the United States\, through the Chinese Exclusion Era (1882–1943)\, to the recent decades that have witnessed the community’s significant growth across Greater Boston\, as well as the many challenges it continues to face. \nAbout the speaker: Lisong Liu is professor of history at Massachusetts College of Art and Design. His teaching and research interests focus on Chinese migration\, Asian American history\, U.S.-China relations\, and world history. His monograph on Chinese student and professional migration was published in 2015 as part of Routledge’s “Chinese Worlds” series. His current book project is about the history of Chinese immigrants in Boston. SUMMARY:Newton History Series: The Troubled History of Race and Public Education in Massachusetts
DESCRIPTION:Many of us learn about school desegregation in the context of the mid-twentieth-century South: Brown v. Board of Education\, Ruby Bridges\, and the Little Rock Nine. Yet a century before that\, young Black women in Massachusetts led the fight for equal school rights—the right of all to a quality education on an equal basis. This lecture examines the lives of young Black women whose activism reshaped public education in the Bay State. Exploring this history is vital\, not only to spotlight the long struggle for Black educational justice\, but also to remind us of our collective obligation to democratize public schools today. \nAbout the speaker: Kabria Baumgartner is an award-winning historian who has worked with numerous historical organizations. In 2021\, she co-founded the award-winning Newburyport Black History Initiative (NBHI)\, an organization that highlights and incorporates Black history into the public landscape in downtown Newburyport. In 2019\, she published her first academic book\, In Pursuit of Knowledge: Black Women and Educational Activism in Antebellum America\, which tells the story of young Black women who fought to democratize public education in the nineteenth-century North. SUMMARY:Newton History Series: Land as Archive in the Native Northeast
DESCRIPTION:Since the time of first interactions between English settlers and the Native peoples of the Dawnland\, the settler colonial project has focused on the continued dispossession of Indigenous homelands. Early land deed or transfer documents drawn up between settlers and Narragansett\, Nipmuc\, Wampanoag\, Pequot and other tribal representatives\, before and after King Philip’s War (1675-76)\, represent just one of the audacious forms of dispossession enacted by settlers across the Native Northeast. This talk will explore the imposition\, impacts\, and legacies of these 17th century documents\, and the lives and experiences of the Native people who signed them. \nAbout the speaker: Kimberly Toney is an enrolled member of the Hassanamisco Band of Nipmuc\, and is the Inaugural Coordinating Curator of Native American and Indigenous Collections\, jointly appointed to the John Carter Brown and John Hay Libraries at Brown University. Kim has worked in special collections libraries for more than 15 years\, including as Head of Readers’ Services and Director of Indigenous Initiatives at the American Antiquarian Society on Nipmuc homelands in Worcester\, Massachusetts. Kim is Co-Chair of the newly formed Nipmuc Community Land Project\, and regularly serves as a consultant to cultural heritage institutions across southern New England. SUMMARY:"An Uncommon Education" Film Showing and Panel Q&A
DESCRIPTION:Join Historic Newton\, West Newton Cinema\, and Newton Cultural Alliance for a film showing and panel discussion of the original film “An Uncommon Education: The Allen School”. The panel will feature key members of the film’s production including the director\, Joe Hunter. Guests will also be able to view the coinciding exhibit installed at West Newton Cinema. \nAt a time when slavery was still the law of the land and women’s suffrage still a distant goal\, the West Newton English and Classical School admitted Black students\, international students\, and women to a forward-looking program of study. Founded in 1854 and led by Nathaniel T. Allen\, the school (often called the Allen School) empowered its students to develop their talents while moving society decisively toward gender\, racial\, and educational equality. The inclusion of gymnastics as part of the educational offering\, along with kindergarten\, were also educational firsts. \nThis film restores a little-known piece of history in Massachusetts\, a state that values education and has been a pioneer in fostering inclusion. Early in his career\, Allen worked closely with progressive educator Horace Mann\, the first Secretary of the Massachusetts State Board of Education\, and lived for a time in Mann;s home in West Newton. Many of the ideas that Allen helped develop are still relevant today. Teachers and those who want to learn more about progressive ideas in education will find the content of special interest. \nThis is a tripartite collaboration and revenue from ticket sales will be divided evenly between the three non-profit organizations.

DESCRIPTION:In commemoration of the 250th anniversary of the American Revolution\, walk through the city’s oldest burying ground to see the final resting places of Newtonians who were active in the conflict. Learn about General Michael Jackson’s leadership at the battle of Lexington and Concord\, how Timothy Jackson earned a commendation from George Washington\, and Edward Durant’s participation in Newton’s Committee of Correspondence. We’ll also talk about the women\, enslaved and free Africans\, and Indigenous Peoples whose stories are less widely known but whose experiences are no less important. SUMMARY:Newton History Series: A Pressing Matter - 18th Century Media Literacy and Bias
DESCRIPTION:Media and information literacy are essential 21st-century skills in order to be an informed citizen. These are also skills that\, when applied in a historical context\, help us become better historians. In this discussion\, we will analyze perspective\, language\, and bias in 18th-century newspapers\, with a critical lens on how news was consumed in colonial America. \nAbout the speaker: Michele Gabrielson is a local history teacher and historic interpreter of the 18th century. When she is not teaching in the classroom\, Michele can be found leading tours\, lectures\, and demonstrations at historic sites in the greater Boston area. She specializes in interpreting the history of colonial women printers\, the stories of loyalist refugees\, and of 18th century chocolate makers! Most recently\, she has taken on building a first-person impression of the revolutionary playwright and poet Mercy Otis Warren. Michele additionally serves on several historical committees dedicated to helping preserve the history of colonial America\, is a member of the Authenticity Standards Committee for Minuteman National Historic Park\, and is the coordinator for the Battle Road Guides for the annual reenactment of the Battle of Lexington and Concord. She was recently awarded a 2024 Rising Star Award for Public History by the Massachusetts History Alliance for her programming titled\, “The Revolutionary Classroom\,” and named a finalist for the 2024 Massachusetts History Teacher of the Year. \nThis program is part of the Newton History Series\, co-sponsored by Historic Newton and the Newton Free Library.
