SUMMARY:Efficient Water Heating for Newton Homes
DESCRIPTION:Newton homeowners and residents are invited to a free virtual educational webinar\, Efficient Water Heating for Newton Homes\, on Thursday\, February 19 from 6:00 PM to 7:00 PM via Zoom. The event will explore efficient\, low-carbon water heating solutions and offer guidance for anyone considering a water heater upgrade or replacement.\nWater heating represents one of the largest energy uses in a typical home\, and choosing the right system can lead to significant energy bill savings and reduced carbon emissions. The webinar is designed to provide practical\, non-technical information to help residents make informed decisions about their hot water systems.\nThe program will cover a range of options\, including heat pump water heaters\, which use electricity more efficiently and can lower energy use and emissions; solar-assisted and hybrid systems that combine renewable energy with modern heat pump technology; and tankless (on-demand) water heaters\, with guidance on when they may be a good fit for a home. The session will also include a real-world case study illustrating how a homeowner evaluated options and made a decision.\nThe session will focus on how these systems perform in everyday life — including space and installation considerations\, efficiency\, and long-term value — with time allotted for attendee questions.\nThe webinar is co-hosted by Green Newton and the City of Newton Climate & Sustainability Team\, with local expert participation from Reservoir Home\, New England Solar Hot Water\, and Boston Tank Swap.\nEvent Details:\nEfficient Water Heating for Newton Homes — Free Webinar\nThursday\, February 19\, 6:00 PM – 7:00 PM\nFree virtual event; registration required to receive the Zoom link. \nFor more information and to register\, visit greennewton.org/event/efficient-water-heating-webinar/

SUMMARY:Gardeners: Powerful Agents of Change
DESCRIPTION:This gathering is part of the Greening Houses of Worship series—created to empower Newton’s faith communities with practical\, inspiring ways to reduce environmental impact and live more sustainably. \nJoin neighbors\, friends\, and fellow seekers as we explore one of the most humble—yet revolutionary—ways to live that calling: gardening. When you plant a seed\, you’re not just growing food or flowers\, you’re nurturing resilience\, combating ecological collapse\, and cultivating hope. Gardening is a quiet but powerful act of climate heroism. \nOur keynote speaker\, Reverend Maya Balle\, brings wisdom and warmth from her work as an Interfaith Minister\, spiritual teacher\, and coach\, and a long-time gardener. With challenges of health\, political upheaval\, and the threatening of our pollinators she believes\nour gardens become sanctuaries of healing and community action. Her message will inspire you to see gardening—and your own role in the world—in a new light. \nRev. Balle will be joined by a panel of native plant gardeners and a tender of bees and trees. This is a chance to connect\, be inspired\, and discover how your hands can help heal the planet. We hope you’ll join us. Together\, we can grow something beautiful.

SUMMARY:Networked Geothermal Volunteer Training
DESCRIPTION:Green Newton is inviting local residents to participate in a short training to become Home Visit Volunteers as part of an initiative to evaluate the feasibility of a networked\ngeothermal system in the Countryside School neighborhood. The first volunteer training takes place on October 8\, 7:00 pm at Auburndale Builders\, 151R Adams St\, Newton. This volunteer opportunity allows participants to help gather essential data that will determine whether this innovative clean energy solution is a viable option for heating and cooling homes in the area. \nNetworked geothermal technology uses a series of heat pumps connected to underground wells\, providing an efficient and sustainable alternative to conventional heating and cooling\nsystems. Green Newton is exploring the possibility of implementing a system near Countryside Elementary School and seeks community involvement to collect important information about local homes’ heating and cooling characteristics. \nVolunteers will receive training in October. During the training\, they will learn how to conduct home visits and collect basic data about residential heating and cooling systems. No prior\nexpertise is required—volunteers need only the ability to recognize heating and cooling systems. After training\, volunteers will begin visiting homes in the neighborhood\, gathering data over the course of several months. Home visits will be scheduled at the convenience of both\nvolunteers and homeowners. \nThose interested in volunteering can sign up for the October 8 training session on Green Newton’s website: greennewton.org/home-volunteer. If the October training date is not feasible\, alternative sessions will be arranged. For more information\, or to express interest in the program\, residents are encouraged to contact Judy Lehrer Jacobs at judy@greennewton.org
