SUMMARY:Save Soil Social Justice Speaker Lunch
DESCRIPTION:FUUSN’s Social Justice Speakers Task Force invites you to a discussion with Greg Maslowe\, the Manager of the Newton Community Farm\, and Prathyusha Dasari\, from Save Soil\, on Sunday\, March 1\, from 12:00 to 1:30 p.m. at FUUSN\, Alliance Room -1326 Washington Street\, West Newton\, MA 02465.\nNewton Community Farm has been farmed continuously for over 350 years. Despite this long history of agricultural use\, the farm’s soil is a thriving biome with high levels of organic matter. Our goal\, as the current users of this land\, is to ensure that it will remain fertile and productive for future generations and a beneficial habitat for the abundant more-than-human life in this area. What techniques does NCF use to ensure these goals? How do these relate to contemporary notions such as regenerative agriculture? And what can you do to enhance the soil health of your own home or garden?\nPrathyusha Dasari\, a volunteer with the Save Soil movement\, will introduce this global initiative dedicated to addressing the growing soil crisis. Save Soil unites people around the world to advocate for soil health and supports leaders of all nations in advancing policies that increase organic matter in agricultural soils. Agricultural soil degradation contributes to an estimated 40% of global warming\, and by 2045\, we may face 40% less food to sustain a projected population of 9.2 billion people. What is the current state of soil worldwide? What has Save Soil accomplished so far—and what can you do to help? SaveSoil.org\nA light lunch will be served.\nThe Social Justice Speakers Task Force is part of FUUSN’s Social Justice Council\, which coordinates our congregation’s efforts to put faith into action through social justice work in our communities and beyond. For more information about FUUSN’s Social Justice Council and to R.S.V.P. to this event\, use this link. First Unitarian Universalist Society in Newton (FUUSN) is a congregation with liberal and progressive theology. Founded in 1848\, for 177 years\, its mission is to connect deeply in community\, grow in spirit\, and build a just world.

SUMMARY:Social Justice Speaker Lunch
DESCRIPTION:FUUSN’s Social Justice Speakers Task Force is holding a discussion with Christine Nguyen\, Jefferson Hussey\, and Renee Hamilton\, volunteer organizers with Eastern Service Workers Association (ESWA). ESWA is an all-volunteer association of low-paid service workers and allies uniting to end poverty conditions in our communities by addressing their root causes. For 49 years in the Boston area\, it has refused government funding or money with strings attached\, relying instead on grassroots support from members and community volunteers. The speakers will talk about ESWA’s Winter Survival Campaign and how members help one another meet urgent needs such as food\, clothing\, and other basic necessities so they can participate in organizing for long-term solutions. You will hear how local small businesses\, students\, professionals\, congregations and other concerned residents support this work. A complementary light lunch will be served. The Social Justice Speakers Task Force is part of FUUSN’s Social Justice Council\, which coordinates our congregation’s efforts to put faith into action through social justice work in our communities and beyond. SUMMARY:Gardeners: Powerful Agents of Change
DESCRIPTION:This gathering is part of the Greening Houses of Worship series—created to empower Newton’s faith communities with practical\, inspiring ways to reduce environmental impact and live more sustainably. \nJoin neighbors\, friends\, and fellow seekers as we explore one of the most humble—yet revolutionary—ways to live that calling: gardening. When you plant a seed\, you’re not just growing food or flowers\, you’re nurturing resilience\, combating ecological collapse\, and cultivating hope. Gardening is a quiet but powerful act of climate heroism. \nOur keynote speaker\, Reverend Maya Balle\, brings wisdom and warmth from her work as an Interfaith Minister\, spiritual teacher\, and coach\, and a long-time gardener. With challenges of health\, political upheaval\, and the threatening of our pollinators she believes\nour gardens become sanctuaries of healing and community action. Her message will inspire you to see gardening—and your own role in the world—in a new light. \nRev. Balle will be joined by a panel of native plant gardeners and a tender of bees and trees. This is a chance to connect\, be inspired\, and discover how your hands can help heal the planet. We hope you’ll join us. Together\, we can grow something beautiful.

SUMMARY:FUUSN Social Action Presentation: Leadership Development in the Wake of the Election
DESCRIPTION:(RSVP required.) Rev. Jo Murphy will speak about her work as executive director of the statewide UU Mass Action organization. She will emphasize leadership development in the wake of the recent election results. \nUU Mass Action was founded by Lynn Holbein\, former Co-Chair of the FUUSN Social Action Council before she moved to North Carolina. Their mission is to organize and mobilize UUs in Massachusetts to confront oppression. They provide pathways towards justice and identify opportunities in which we can live our shared values. They build relationships with congregational leaders and work to develop their leadership and engage them in our statewide campaigns. These are campaigns on climate and economic justice\, immigrant justice\, housing justice\, youth engagement and more. Every year in April they lead all congregational teams to lobby their state representatives and senators about pending legislation that need sponsorships and support. \nRev. Jo worked as a chaplain at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center in Boston for the past two years\, in addition to being a case manager supporting people living with brain injuries. She is a volunteer organizer with the Boston Immigration Justice Accompaniment Network and with the Boston chapter of Standing Up for Racial Justice.
