As the weather warms this weekend, there’s a lot to see around the city. There’s probably going to be some rain on Sunday, so plan accordingly.
With a baker’s dozen villages, the city isn’t lacking in holiday season activity. And Hanukkah has begun, bringing with it a weekend packed with music and a party at City Hall.
Here are five things to do in Newton this weekend.
Friday, Dec. 8
- At 8 p.m., Newton-based ensemble Capella Clausura will present their second program for the 2023-2024 season, “Das Jahr,” featuring pianist Lois Shapiro. Das Jahr (which means “The Year”) is a piano piece written by Fanny Mendelssohn Hensel and is inspired by each month of the year. Shapiro is a New York Concert Artist Guild winner and has performed and taught all over the world.
Saturday, Dec. 9
- From 8 to 11:30 a.m., The Street Chestnut Hill presents “Frozen Fun for Little Ones: Hanukkah Sing-Along,” featuring general holiday music and songs related specifically to Hanukkah, for families with children. The event is free, but space is limited so pre-registration is suggested.
- From noon to 4 p.m., on both Saturday and Sunday, Fulfilled Goods, located at 612 Washington St., will be hosting an Ornament Swap. You can bring any ornaments you no longer want but are in decent shape and exchange them for someone else’s items. And even though Hanukkah has already started, you can bring and swap menorahs as well.
Sunday, Dec. 10
- From 3 to 5 p.m., Center Makor will hold “The Miracle of Lights: Holiday Festival for the Entire Family,” at Newton City Hall. The festival will feature a concert celebrating Ukrainian and Israeli music and culture, with live performances by Ukraine’s Got Talent star Sofia Shkidchenko, the award-winning children’s group Stellar Voices, choreographer Vladimir Foygelman and more. There will also games and activities for the whole family as well as a balloon animal artist starting at 4 p.m.
- Also at 3 p.m., the New Philharmonic Orchestra and Boston Ballet School will have a Holiday Concert at Brown Middle School featuring live choreography in Tchaikovsky’s “Nutcracker Suite” and a performance of “Let There Be Peace On Earth” featuring Simona Karadoneva.
