This weekend is all about reflection and service.
Twenty-five years ago, America and the world changed forever, after hijackers flew planes into the World Trade Center and the Pentagon and a plane taken back by passengers crashed in Pennsylvania. On Friday, Newton officials will gather with families of those who died that day to reflect on their sacrifice and honor the heroes that stepped up when the nation was knocked down.
On Sunday, you can nourish your spirit with a church service and barbecue.
Here are five things to do in Newton this weekend.
Friday, Sept. 11
From 3 to 4 p.m., the city will honor the victims and the heroes of the Sept. 11, 2001, terror attacks, at the Newton Fire Department Headquarters, 1164 Centre St.
From 5 to 7 p.m., the Betty Meyer Gallery at United Parish of Auburndale will host an opening reception for the exhibit “Terrestrial” by artis Rani Sarin.
Saturday. Sept. 12
From 1 to 2:30 p.m., the Scandinavian Cultural Center will host a screening of “The Summer Book,” a film adaptation of Finnish author Tove Jansson’s 1972 novel, “Sommarboken,” starring Glenn Close. The film is set on an island in the Gulf of Finland and follows 6-year-old Sofia as she and her father grieve her mother.
Sunday, Sept. 13
At 10:30 a.m., Grace Church, 76 Eldredge Street, Newton Corner, will host a Welcome Sunday service, inviting those starting a new school year or new job to being a backpack and receive a blessing. After the service, there will be a Welcome Barbecue on the church’s front lawn, with hamburgers, hot dogs, veggie burgers and caprese sandwiches.
From 11 a.m. to 2 p.m., Upper Falls Village Day will take over Pettee Square. There will be live music, dancing, a bouncy house, a petting zoo and more.
