Thunderstorms are expected on Friday and Saturday night, but other than that, it looks to be a nice weekend to get out and mingle with your community.
Take up crocheting. Step back in time 70 years for a concert and a movie. Check out the farmers’ market. This is also the final week for the city-sponsored Performances in the Park series this season.
Here are five things to do in Newton this weekend.
Friday, Aug. 7
From 6 to 8 p.m., the Hyde Community Center will host a concert by Soft Touch, an 16-piece classic big band with full horn and rhythm sections and two vocalists specializing in swing-era music from the 1940s to the 1960s as well as Broadway hits and classic rock favorites. After the concert, there will be a screening of the 1954 film “Rear Window” starring James Stewart and Grace Kelly.
Saturday, Aug. 8
From 1 to 2:30 p.m., the Newton Free Library will host Crochet for Our Community, and participants will learn to crochet flowers that will be donated to a local hospital.
From 9:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m., the city will have its Saturday Farmers’ Market at Newton North High School.
Sunday, Aug. 9
At 4 p.m., Rock Voices Newton will host its Community Rock Choir Summer Concert 2026 at Newton South High School, 140 Brandeis Road, performing covers of songs from movies by Peter Gabriel, Abba, Carly Simon and more. Tickets range from $10 to $20, free for children 12 and under.
From 6 to 7:30 p.m., the final week of this season’s Performances in the Park will feature the Ruth and Ben String Band performing songs in old-Appalachian-style at the Newton Centre Bowl. 1221 Centre St.
