In what brings to mind the movie Groundhog Day, we’re looking at another weekend of sub-freezing temperatures and a chance of snow.
There’s no Bill Murray in Newton this weekend, but there’s a lot of music. There’s a cappella Friday, Swedish music on Saturday and the musical horror film “Sinners” on Sunday.
Here are five things to do in Newton this weekend.
Friday, Feb. 6
From 7:30 to 9:30 p.m., the Allen Center, will host an a cappella concert by Colgate 13, Colgate University’s all-male a cappella ensemble and the longest running all-male undergraduate collegiate a cappella group in the United States. Admission is free, but seating capacity is limited, so registration is required.
Saturday, Feb, 7
From 10 a.m. to noon, the Waban Library Center, located at 1608 Beacon St., will host a Coffee Hour, with free coffee and tea, for those who want to chat with friends, meet new friends or just sit and use the wifi.
At 1 p.m., Oskar Stenmark will play a mix of Swedish folk music and more contemporary fare, and you can watch footage from his grandmother’s 1976 fiddle tour, at the Scandinavian Cultural Center, 206 Waltham St. Tickets are $20, $10 for members.
From 4 to 6:30 p.m., West Newton Cinema will present filmmaker John Sayles reading from and discussing his new novel, The Crucible, along with his classic film, “City of Hope,” with “Here & Now” co-host Robin Young. Tickets are $20.
Sunday, Feb. 8
From 1 to 3:30 p.m., West Newton Cinema will host a screening of the Oscar-nominated 2025 musical horror film, “Sinners,” (record 16 nominations) written and directed by Ryan Coogler, set in 1932 Mississippi during the Jim Crow era. There will be a post-screening discussion with a panel that includes Jake Blount, music consultant for the film; Joel Larue Smith, pianist and Tufts music professor; and Bill Lowe, composer and leader of Signifyin’ Natives. Tickets are $12.
