SUMMARY:Behind the Screen: La Bola Negra
DESCRIPTION:ABOUT THE FILM\nLA BOLA NEGRA\, the bold new film from Spanish writer-directors Javier Calvo and Javier Ambrossi\, won the Best Director award at Cannes and the People’s Choice award at the Toronto International Film Festival. Inspired by the surviving pages of an unfinished play by Federico García Lorca and by Alberto Conejero’s award-winning play La piedra oscura\, the film tells the interconnected stories of three gay men in Spain in 1932\, 1937\, and 2017. Moving from the years before the Spanish Civil War\, through the war itself\, to the present day\, LA BOLA NEGRA is a sweeping\, passionate triptych about desire\, repression\, historical memory\, and what one generation carries forward to the next. \nPANEL DISCUSSION FOLLOWS\nOur panel will explore the film’s roots in Lorca’s work\, its portrayal of the Spanish Civil War and the Franco era\, and how it brings queer history and historical memory to the screen. \nCARLOS RAMOS\nMargaret E. Deffenbaugh and LeRoy T. Carlson Professor in Comparative Literary Studies and Professor of Spanish\, Wellesley College\nCarlos Ramos’s teaching and research focus on the literature and cultural history of contemporary Spain. His published work includes Construyendo la modernidad: Escritura y arquitectura en el Madrid moderno (1918-1937) and Poesía insomne. \nWAN SONYA TANG\nAssociate Professor of Hispanic Studies\, Boston College\nWan Sonya Tang teaches courses on Spanish literature and culture from the nineteenth century onward. She is the author of Specters\, Monsters\, and the Damned: Fantastic Threats to the Social Order in 19th-Century Spain and co-editor of Televising Restoration Spain\, which examines how heritage film and television explore Spain’s relationship to modernity in the late 1800s and early 1900s. \nModerator:\nFERNANDO ROSENBERG\nProfessor of Hispanic Studies and Comparative Literature\, Brandeis University\nFernando Rosenberg is the author of After Human Rights: Literature\, Visual Arts\, and Film in Latin America\, 1990-2010.

SUMMARY:Riverdogs & The Same River Twice
DESCRIPTION:ABOUT THE FILMS\nIn 1978 Robb Moss filmed a group of friends\, young river guides\, on a 35-day rafting trip through the Grand Canyon\, and he has kept filming them ever since. \nTHE SAME RIVER TWICE (2003\, 78 min.) catches up with five of those friends\, Barry\, Cathy\, Danny\, Jeff and Jim\, twenty years later. Two have served as mayors and one as a county commissioner\, and all five are weighing the free lives they once led against the ones they have built. The film premiered at the Sundance Film Festival. \nRIVERDOGS (1982\, 32 min.) is Moss’s original record of that summer on the Colorado River\, a lyrical and unselfconscious portrait of youth and the canyon. RIVERDOGS contains nudity.

SUMMARY:Behind the Screen: Once Upon A Time In Harlem
DESCRIPTION:ABOUT THE FILM\nONCE UPON A TIME IN HARLEM captures an extraordinary evening in 1972\, when pioneering documentarian William Greaves gathered surviving luminaries of the Harlem Renaissance at Duke Ellington’s Harlem townhouse. Over four hours\, artists\, writers\, and intellectuals\, many of whom had not seen one another in fifty years\, reminisced\, argued\, laughed\, and debated their place in a rapidly changing cultural landscape. Greaves considered it the most important event he ever filmed. Decades later\, his son David Greaves\, one of the original camera operators\, restored the 16mm footage and completed the film\, creating both a vivid time capsule and a searching inquiry into one of the most creative periods in American history. \nPANEL DISCUSSION FOLLOWS\nOur panelists will discuss the Harlem Renaissance and its legacy\, the remarkable figures gathered in Greaves’s footage\, and the story of how this film was made and\, fifty years later\, finally completed. \nKENDRA FIELD\nAssociate Professor of History and Director of the Center for Public History\, Tufts University\nKendra Field is Associate Professor of History and Director of the Center for Public History at Tufts University. SUMMARY:Musical Matinee: Kiss Me Kate
DESCRIPTION:Two formerly married actors (Kathryn Grayson and Howard Keel) are forced back into contact with each other when they’re cast in a production of Shakespeare’s The Taming of the Shrew. Will their history completely derail the show\, or will they find a way to put their differences aside until\, at least\, opening night? Or could they even start to like each other again? A bright technicolor confection\, Kiss Me Kate brings The Taming of the Shrew into the age of the MGM musical\, complete with music by the one and only Cole Porter. This film brings laughs a-plenty\, with gorgeous sets and costumes—and keep your eyes peeled for a young Bob Fosse in one of his first screen roles!
