SUMMARY:Impressions
DESCRIPTION:What’s this program about? \nImpressions features pieces that can be connected to a style of art that either influenced the piece directly or was heavily prominent in the region where it was created at the time it was written. Caroline Shaw talks about how she was inspired to write this piece after listening to the different “colors” of a Haydn quartet and her mission to take that idea even further into the technicolor. Rini aims to call attention to the importance of traditional art and its influence on how we live. There is an easy connection that can be made between her piece and the Javanese batik style. Ravel rejected the idea of being an impressionist but so did the painters of his time. At the end of the day\, it is clear to see how music and visual arts influenced each other. \nThe Music \nCaroline Shaw (USA) – Entr’act \nPeni Candra Rini (Indonesia) – Maduswara \nMaurice Ravel (France) – String Quartet in F Major \nCome Ready to \nMake connections between visual art and music\, explore different styles and traditions\, and create your own masterpiece. \nMusicians \nPeter Paetkau – Violin\, Thompson Wang – Violin\, Maureen Sheehan – Viola\, Nicholas Johnson – Cello \n*Concert will last approx. 1 hour

SUMMARY:Boston Festival Orchestra Chamber Series: Zara & Dmitri
DESCRIPTION:PROGRAM\nZara Levina\, Kanzonetta\nZara Levina\, Fantasy on Bashkir Themes\nDmitri Shostakovich\, Piano Trio No. 2 in E minor\, Op. 67 \nPERFORMERS\nAlyssa Wang\, violin\nSamuel Boundy\, cello\nJihye Chang\, piano \nABOUT THE PERFORMANCE \nTwo composers. One generation. Two remarkably different voices. \nDmitri Shostakovich is one of the most celebrated composers of the 20th century. Zara Levina\, though nearly his exact contemporary and a fellow Soviet composer\, remains largely unknown to American audiences. This concert brings their music–and their stories–side by side\, with the ideological pressure of state censorship ever present. \nLevina’s Fantasy on Bashkir Themes and Canzonetta reveal a composer with a vivid melodic imagination\, drawing on folk traditions\, Jewish themes\, and the rich musical language of her time. Shostakovich’s Piano Trio No. 2 moves from an eerie\, almost otherworldly opening through unbridled mania\, profound grief\, and a grotesque final dance that also incorporates Jewish themes. It is at once intensely personal and deeply connected to the devastation of the Second World War. \nThese three works illuminate the fascinating musical landscape of the Soviet Union through the eyes of a composer whose name became legendary and another whose music is only now beginning to receive the attention it deserves. Heard side by side\, their music raises questions that extend far beyond time and place: How can music be an act of defiance? How can it preserve what history tries to erase? Whose voices get remembered—and whose are left behind? \nJoin BFO Artistic Director Alyssa Wang\, BFO musicians\, and guest artists for an immersive chamber music experience that blends performance with thoughtful discussion\, inviting audiences to engage with the music’s historical\, cultural\, and emotional context.

SUMMARY:Musical Matinee: Tommy
DESCRIPTION:Tommy (Roger Daltrey) is a “deaf\, dumb and blind boy” whose life’s journey goes in many different directions. From sadistic cousins to Marilyn Monroe-worshiping healers\, acid queens to pinball wizards\, Tommy meets a lot of characters on his way to becoming a messiah… and they come bearing songs. An unruly rock opera for the post-hippie age\, Ken Russell’s adaptation of The Who’s iconic album is genuinely out of this world. Featuring an all-star cast including Oliver Reed\, Ann-Margaret\, and Jack Nicholson\, with rockstars Elton John\, Eric Clapton\, Tina Turner\, and more putting their own spin on classic songs\, Tommy is a true time capsule. Russell’s flamboyant sensibility pairs perfectly with the album\, Tommy\, and his kaleidoscopic\, acid-soaked visuals do not disappoint.

SUMMARY:Ty Burr's Movie Club: Bringing Up Baby
DESCRIPTION:Screwball comedy\, classic Hollywood’s most inspired invention\, came of age in the years immediately after the Great Depression had turned everything topsy-turvy; consequently\, everything feels backward. The rich are boobs\, the butlers went to Harvard\, dying girls get socked on the jaw\, Cary Grant’s a nerd. Screwball inverts the accepted class structure of American society and turns gender roles inside out; it rockets along with a cynicism that feels both liberating and earned. And Bringing Up Baby is the most extreme and extremely funny example of the form. \nFew films so well illustrate director Howard Hawks’s belief that men spend their lives holding dignity together while women are dedicated to blowing it all apart. Katharine Hepburn plays a series of widening disasters that happen to a fuddy-duddy paleontologist (Grant) who just wants to get married and locate his bone\, not necessarily in that order. (The bone belongs to a dinosaur and at one point gets buried by a dog; even a child can look at the brontosaurus skeleton in the opening sequence and know it’s going to come crashing down before the end credits.) \nThe movie’s this close to Seussian anarchy\, with characters talking the way we all wish we could talk: twice as fast and thrice as sharp. The story line’s ridiculous: two escaped leopards\, Grant in a negligee yelping “I just went gay all of a sudden!\,” Hepburn losing a heel and teetering on a midnight hillside in delight. The film is graceful enough to turn the woods of Greenwich\, Connecticut\, into Shakespeare’s Forest of Arden\,and demonic enough to let Hepburn sink a ten-foot putt. Hawks understood that screwball is life with the disorder magnified\, then gloriously ignored\, and no more recklessly than here.
